"YOU KNEW THE TREES" is me and my Apple macbook, telling the story of how I met this amazing, spiritual man near Sunset Junction in Silver Lake in Los Angeles, California, USA.

We were walking along the same sidewalk together and I knew I was meant to meet him.
So I said hello.
We came to know each other.
He had spent most of his adult life traveling around the world, making a mystical impact on those he met.

AND HE KNEW THE TREES.

I hope you enjoy sharing this experience with me.

THIS SONG IS ABOUT my gratitude at being able to spend time with a person who operates on a higher level of existence, in commune with nature and life. It is about my respect at seeing someone who has taken a different path in life.

HOW I WORK:

I compose on Apple computer macbook and also use guitar.

I work in Garage Band, which is like ProTools for the mac -- lots of filters and effects, capability for up to about 13 tracks until it overloads.

I record directly into the mac, and use a midi or sometimes play the computer keyboard piano-style.

I have a gizmo that lets me plug my Ibanez acoustic electric guitar directly into the computer. And Garage Band gives the guitar any sound imaginable -- from folk to distorted electric - even bass or other instruments.

On this piece, I used the little built-in mic on the computer for voice, because I had to record and mix it up fast. Garage Band has lots of voice filters, too. Last night I was experimenting with cartoon voices. My voice translates well to chipmunk.

The great thing about this set-up is that I have a little recording studio built into my laptop. I carry it in my messenger bag on hikes into the mountains and record there.

I first learned sound production years ago in a major Chicago sound studio, so having this tiny portable set-up is a truly amazing thing.

My macbook is my friend, my co-worker, my best buddy, even my lover.

I try to keep putting up different tunes every day or so on myspace--
often these are works in progress, and I add the updated versions as I go along,
