Hi,

We were recently asked why our track is called “Eleven 59”

Here at The Future Shape Of Sound we are committed to providing quality Space Age Gangster Soul for all your entertainment needs.

The music industry is changing. We, as musicians must understand with our ‘creative and artistic minds’ that we have to continually adapt to the new environment and think hard about innovative ways of selling our music. New niches in the market are to be discovered. Needs that did not exist should be created, new fan demographics must be identified. The marketing dept here at The Future Shape Of Sound thinks outside the box and has come up with a number of pioneering concepts to pave the way to a more certain future for musicians. Here is one of them.

Eleven 59 is a party track to 'put on' just before the world comes to an end. The title refers to one minute before midnight on the Doomsday clock. The full version of the song has a one-minute intro (a Baptist-preacher-style speech defining The Future Shape Of Sound, delivered by Reverend Big Daddy Kai). This will enable you to put on the track at exactly one minute before the big crunch so that the actual music will kick in at the precise moment the world will end.

In recent history there have always been groups of people who insist that the apocalypse is imminent which is why we believe this demographic can be a large market-segment for this kind of track. A target group that may be one of the last surviving consumer groups who we can trick into “paying” for music as they have a true emotional involvement with the idea of the track. Also they may not be too worried about hanging on to their cash for obvious reasons. We have put together a business plan to fully exploit this financial opportunity.

Airplay:
Despite our 'artistic and creative minds' we recognise the inherent problems:
If the end of the world only lasts a split second you wouldn’t hear much of the track. Therefore we can only hope that the end of the world will take at least 4 minutes so that the entire song will be aired. However, even if the end of the world was to take more than 4 minutes, chances are that the stereo wouldn't be working anymore or you’ve been relieved of your i-pod by a gang of what used to be law-abiding citizens during the preceding anarchy, or it has run out of battery because everyone at London Electricity has already gone home.

Another risk is that you may not be sure when exactly the end of the world is coming. By the time you know it, it may be too late and you possibly haven’t had a chance to put the track on. Don’t worry; this would not necessarily be your fault…

With all this uncertainty we completely understand that you may be tempted to play the song on other occasions i.e. one minute before the end of something so that the music will mark the beginning of whatever after the end of whatever. New Year’s Eve is only one of many perfect examples.

In fact, we strongly recommend you make use of the song’s unique functionality on as many occasions as possible. Also we, as a self-managed band and business, understand despite our 'creative and artistic minds', that if this song was only played at the time the end of the world happens it would not really get much airplay except one spot-play, if that, and therefore our chances to enter any charts would be relatively slim. Also the royalties, even if paid in advance, would be rather small.
In negotiations about such advances there would have to be an estimate of how many people would still be alive to listen to the track etc etc. You know lawyers…It is problematic. We cannot afford to be purists anymore…we have to promote and sell ourselves and the services we provide and constantly find new streams of revenue. But we must emphasize the original purpose of the song. The lyrics and music are designed to inspire a party atmosphere and distract from the actual unfortunate event that is the end of the world or the events that may have led to it. It provides an emotional escape from reality, which according to our market research is exactly what the majority of people want at that point in time or in fact any time.

We do pride ourselves however to having contributed to future music history by having written a song that is potentially the last song ever played before the end of existence. In fact, we will be the full stop at the end of music history.
We are currently working on The Future Radio Pod, which is a non-destructible device capable of playing the song Eleven 59 on rotation on all radio frequencies as well as through speakers. The purpose of this player is to positively represent human kind after it’s demise. We do care for human kind and want to leave a good impression to any extra-terrestrials who may land here when the planet has fallen victim to human greed and stupidity. We also feel the need to protect them from the modern music that is out there and may have survived.
We may or may not include a stop button. We will almost certainly include remixes and a bonus track.

Thanks for listening
Yours
Capt Future and the Future Crew
